Preview: The New Normal + Filmmaker Q&A

Set in New York, London and Porto Alegre, THE NEW NORMAL is a powerful and factual interweaving drama that follows three people from vastly different backgrounds and how their lives are impacted by political failure to respond to the global Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. As the official COVID 19 Enquiry trundles on, THE NEW NORMAL presents an honest slice of reality and an accurate depiction of what happened and perhaps more importantly, what went wrong, during the early stages of the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Followed by a live Q&A session with the filmmakers. Writer/Director Michael Jaffer writes: "We at Exile Studios are very proud of this film and hope that it will go some way to explaining just how we ended up in this catastrophic mess due to many underestimating the very real danger COVID-19 presented. For obvious reasons it was extremely challenging trying to make a film during the pandemic given the risks of the virus and various restrictions. However, despite all of the lockdowns and restrictions imposed, we somehow managed. It was important to us to complete the film while the world was still mindful of the fallout from the pandemic and capture the widespread devastation caused. Cinematographer Ariel Artur and I decided to shoot in black and white so that the focus would be on the narrative and dialogue as opposed to the imagery or visuals. It was important to avoid any distractions as the film has a fast moving pace and is dialogue driven. Fans of the Polish classics COLD WAR and IDA will hopefully recognize the similarity with THE NEW NORMAL in terms of the aesthetic as all three films were graded by Michal Herman. As time passes and future generations seek answers as to why their lives are so different from those before them, I hope this film will serve a useful purpose in detailing just how and why the world changed so dramatically in 2020."PT1H40MPG2025-02-24
