Jubilee: Love in the Age of Anarchy

In his provocative representation of the punk movement, infamous British director Derek Jarman brings together a cast of queer, punk actors and musical icons in his sophomore feature. Queen Elizabeth I transported 400 years into the future to a dystopian 1970s London filled with fascist police and nihilistic girl gangs. In a barren landscape populated with smoking rubble and barbed wire, law and order is destroyed and media moguls rule. Though Jubilee was much derided by the punk community upon its release, it has since been proclaimed one of the most honest representations of the movement – highlighting both punk’s important in British culture and its close relationship with fascism. This screening will be in Screen 1, and features an introduction by Sarah Cleary @funeralparadepresents. LOVE IN THE AGE OF ANARCHY is a season of queer punk and riot grrrl films from the late 1970s, 80s, and 90s that celebrate self-expression and rebellion against the confines of authoritarianism and heteronormativity. Inspired by the queercore movement of the mid-80s, this season of four screenings will showcase three features and a collection of shorts that highlight the timeless appeal of queer punk culture.
