Dream Emulator Presents: A Night in the Mansion of Hidden Souls
Sega CD Original 'Mansion of Hidden Souls,1993' + Sega Saturn Remake 'The Mansion of Hidden Souls,1994'
"He will turn you into a butterfly, after that you will no longer be human."
This is the closest we’ve gotten as an entity to putting on a B-movie screening, but we couldn’t resist the clunky charm of this pair of early 90s FMV horror games, one eerie and abstract, the other uncanny and irreverent.
The Mansion of Hidden Souls series is a relic that harkens to the earliest FMV games from the early 90s, a snapshot of games that simultaneously exemplify the technological advances being made in the industry and its inability to combine these advances with a coherent narrative or mechanical foundation.
This installment of Dream Emulator is a love letter to these clunky early attempts to describe a 3-dimensional space, with mismatched translations of wire frame object to bitmapped displays, and poorly-synced talking-heads.
If Dream Emulator usually focuses on games that wear their rough edges with pride and intention, these two games will be a welcome introduction of naive camp to our programming, veering into uncanny territory purely through pushing the envelope of game development for the hardware they were each created for.Dream Emulator Presents: A Night in the Mansion of Hidden Souls showing at: January 16, 8:45 pm
