Synopsis

“I can shake off everything as I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn.”

Another brilliantly inventive fable that fuses historical narrative and wondrous animation, from the director of WALTZ WITH BASHIR, inspired by the remarkably vivid diary of young Anne Frank. Discovered in the attic in the German occupied Amsterdam of the early 1940’s in which she spent the last years of her life, her record of a life in hiding has become a powerful and eloquent testament to the human spirit.

A storm is raging in present day Amsterdam. Inside the Anne Frank Museum the glass encasing Anne’s precious diary is smashed and out of a swirl of ink and some strange magic comes Kitty, the imaginary teenage girl to whom Anne addressed her thoughts. Kitty doesn’t know what became of Anne and her family but as she journeys out into the 21st century in search of her only friend, she encounters a world in which Anne’s story is everywhere, but the warnings inherent in her legacy are in danger of being lost...

As it shifts between the real world and dreamlike visions, WHERE IS ANNE FRANK? is as thoughtful, moving, inspirational, sobering and surprisingly humorous as the diary itself.
