Synopsis
Panah Panahi’s award winning road movie with a difference is as charming as it is sharp-witted.
A boisterous Iranian family of four —two middle-aged parents and their two sons, one a taciturn adult, the other a garrulous, hyperactive 6-year-old, embarks on a journey shrouded in mystery, fear, and the unknown. Dad appears to have a broken leg. Mom tries to laugh when she’s not holding back tears. The little brother keeps exploding into choreographed car karaoke. All of them are fussing over the sick dog and getting on each others’ nerves. Only the mysterious older brother is quiet. But where are they going, and why...?
Director Panah Panahi, son and collaborator of embattled Iranian master filmmaker Jafar Panahi, gradually builds up the emotional momentum with unexpected twists and turns delivered with dexterity and force, not to mention a generous dose of pre-revolutionary Iranian pop songs. The result is an enjoyable true-to-life look at ourselves, whoever or wherever we are.
This film is subtitled.
