DEATH IN VENICE

After 50 years, Luchino Visconti's adaptation of a Thomas Mann novel still arouses both passion and praise. Is it one of cinema’s most exalted literary adaptations, as sensually rich as it is allegorically resonant or, a corrupted and distorted gay reading of Mann's original novella?

Composer Gustave Aschenbach (loosely based on Gustav Mahler) travels to Venice in search of repose after a period of artistic and personal stress. But he finds no peace there, for he soon develops a troubling attraction to an adolescent boy, Tadzio, on vacation with his family. The boy embodies an ideal of beauty that Aschenbach has long sought and he becomes infatuated. However, Aschenbach is not the only arrival in Venice...

In a performance both subtle and forceful, Dirk Bogarde is brilliantly cast in the central role and Pasqualino de Santis' camerawork perfectly captures the melancholic, decaying splendour of a dying Venice. And then there is Bjorn Andresen as Tadzio – The Most beautiful Boy in the World...
