Synopsis

SUMMER OF SOUL...…OR, WHEN THE REVOLUTION COULD NOT BE TELEVISED is part music film, part historical record and completely, a powerful and transporting documentary of a defining moment in American history, culture and fashion– the time when 'Negro' became 'Black.'

1969: A Summer of love, protest, social unrest and Woodstock, a music festival that has come to define a generation. Over the course of six weeks and just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The footage was never seen and largely forgotten - until now.

52 years later it's finally time to celebrate. Grammy Award-winning musician Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson's filmmaking debut, a double Sundance major award winner, features never-before-seen concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension and many more.

SUMMER OF SOUL is a wonderful testament to the collective empowerment that music and culture can bring so, altogether now, Let the Sunshine In...
