The most outstanding documentary of the year is a video love letter from a Syrian mother, Waad al-Kateab, to her baby daughter. It also graphically records her intimate and epic journey as, trapped in the cataclysmic conflict that was the five year Aleppo uprising, she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama ('Sky' in Arabic).

FOR SAMA captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice – whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much.
