Synopsis

Aretha Franklin was at the peak of her powers in January 1972 when she recorded the best-selling gospel album of all time before a live audience over two nights at a Baptist church in Los Angeles. The performances were filmed by director Sidney Pollack only for the material to be stored away in vaults for decades. Only now, almost fifty years later, the roof-raising, soul-stirring experience that was and is AMAZING GRACE has been miraculously restored and released.

Quietly entering the Church, Franklin smiles briefly, gathers herself for a moment and then starts to sing. Gently at first, but then ever more powerfully, her voice begins to carry the audience away into an infinite state of being. Accompanied by the Southern California Community Choir, the programme includes ‘How I Got Over’, ‘Precious Memories’ and an unforgettable 11-minute rendition of ‘Amazing Grace.

AMAZING GRACE is a great and unique concert film that transcends nostalgia to celebrate human dignity and the longing for freedom and justice. And of course it is more than a fitting memorial to the great Aretha Franklin.
