This is deeply unsettling psychological cinema, the story follows a group of people who’s lives intersect as they find sexual arousal in car crashes and near-death experiences. A twisted tangled tale it explores non-traditional boundary-pushing sexual obsessions that blur into bisexual dynamics, voyeurism, exhibitionism and homoerotic encounters.
Ballard’s novel was equally controversial when it was published in 1973, quickly becoming an underground best seller, and gaining a cult following, and the source of inspiration for art, films and music (The Creatures “Miss the Girl” and the Normals “Warm Leatherette” – covered by Grace Jones ) only serve to deepen this erotisism… “A tear of petrol is in your eye, the hand brake penetrates your thigh… Quick lets make love before you die” Daniel Miller.
“Danger, sex and death become entwined as eroticism and technology join together in a disturbing, deadly union. Awarded the Special Jury Prize at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival for originality, daring and audacity, Crash remains a subversive and confrontational piece of cinema.” BFI
