Category H: THE WICKER MAN + NOROI THE CURSE

Category H’s Rio Forever/Rio Never Ever season continues with a night of Folk Horror, THE WICKER MAN X NOROI THE CURSE. This 21st August, starting at 20:30, experience two films which look at their countries' respective folklore and the myths which permeate their culture. With a full Category H themed lobby takeoverand special guest introductions, this is a summer screening that cannot be missed.

Beginning our evening is the English classic THE WICKER MAN. Possibly the most influential folk horror film of all time, THE WICKER MAN is the story of conservatism meeting with paganism, and the goings on in remote communities. After a police officer is called to an island off of the coast of Scotland to investigate a missing girl, he encounters the rituals of the local people and starts to suspect there is more going on than meets the eye. Starring Christopher Lee as the enigmatic Lord Summerisle, THE WICKERMAN is one of the most visually exciting horror films to come out of England to this date.

We will then take a break, before returning to the big screen at 11pm for found footage gem NOROI THE CURSE. From cult director Koji Shiraishi, NOROI THE CURSE is a unique and stylish film which explores what happens when you step too close to forces you don’t understand. When a paranormal researcher dies in a mysterious housefire, all that remains of his most recent efforts are some pieces of documentary footage. NOROI THE CURSE shows him investigating seemingly unrelated paranormal events, building up to a terrifyingly tense ending. Up until recently, NOROI THE CURSE had very limited distribution outside of Japan and was nearly impossible to see. With this in mind, Category H could not be more excited to be presenting it at the Rio Cinema for the first time. The screening will have an introduction by filmmaker and Category H Film Club member, Ned Caderni.

Rio Forever/Rio Never Ever is a season curated by Category H horror film club as part of the Rio Cinema’s Rio Forever celebrations. Running from April-November 2026, Rio Forever/Rio Never Ever consists of double bills where one film has been shown at the Rio before, while the other has never graced the cinemas silver screen. Expect unusual pairings and plenty of surprises as we honor the cinema's rich archive, and celebrate our diverse history of late night screenings.

Category H is a late night horror film club programmed by Molly Miles and Scary Claire. Keep up with their screenings on Instagram @categoryhfilms and feel free to message them there with any questions about the screening.
