RIO FOREVER: ASIF KAPADIA PRESENTS: THE GODFATHER: PART TWO, ON 35MM 

As part of our ongoing Rio Forever celebrations, we're delighted to welcome Oscar-winning film director and homegrown Hackney hero Asif Kapadia to introduce a rare 35mm print of one of his favourite movies: the greatest sequel ever told, the saddest gangster movie of all time and arguably the finest work by one of the all-time master filmmakers, Francis Ford Coppola.

A tale of two timelines, The Godfather Part 2 opens with the flight to America of young Vito Andolini, later to be renamed Corleone. Possessed of a powerful combination of ruthlessness, loyalty and cunning, Vito's rise to power in 1920s New York is contrasted with scenes set four decades later, depicting the collapse into paranoia and cruelty of Vito's youngest son, Michael.

With monumental performances from a stacked cast - Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, of course, but let's not forget the recently departed and equally magnificent Diane Keaton - and a vast canvas transporting us from the crowded streets of Little Italy to the fleshpots of revolutionary Cuba, this truly is an American masterpiece.

Director and Rio Patron Asif Kapadia (Senna, Amy, Diego Maradona, 2073) will introduce the film, discussing its importance to him both as a director and film lover.
