For our June Classic Matinee, we dive into blockbuster history with JAWS, Steven Spielberg’s era-defining thriller that forever changed the summer movie season.
When a shark attack rocks the seaside town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody wants to close the beaches, but local officials fear the loss of tourist income. Teaming up with marine biologist Matt Hooper and grizzled fisherman Quint, Brody sets out to hunt the great white responsible. What follows is a masterclass in suspense, with John Williams’ iconic score and three unforgettable central performances driving an edge-of-your-seat battle between man and nature. Taut, thrilling and endlessly rewatchable, JAWS remains a cinematic landmark nearly fifty years on.
Classic Matinee is our monthly senior screening, with tickets just £2.50 for those over 60, plus free tea, coffee and biscuits for all! Screenings are relaxed and accessible, with the lights left partially on throughout and a mid-film intermission. It’s a welcoming chance to socialise and enjoy the full 1930s atmosphere of the Rio, with the circle open for the classic cinema experience.
