Classic Matinee: HARD TRUTHS

For our May Classic Matinee, we present HARD TRUTHS, the most recent contemporary drama from legendary British filmmaker Mike Leigh, a fierce, compassionate and darkly humorous study of family life.

Marianne Jean-Baptiste delivers a towering performance as Pansy, a woman consumed by anxiety, anger and physical pain, lashing out at her husband, her withdrawn son and strangers alike. In contrast stands her warm and open-hearted sister, whose bustling salon and close-knit daughters offer a very different model of connection. With characteristic sharpness and empathy, Leigh explores the pressures, resentments and unspoken love that shape family bonds, asking how we endure one another through years of hurt and misunderstanding.

Classic Matinee is our monthly senior screening, with tickets just £2.50 for those over 60, plus free tea, coffee and biscuits for all! Screenings are relaxed and accessible, with the lights left partially on throughout and a mid-film intermission. It’s a welcoming chance to socialise and enjoy the full 1930s atmosphere of the Rio, with the circle open for the classic cinema experience.
