THE SECRET AGENT

From acclaimed Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho, director of Neighboring Sounds and Bacurau, THE SECRET AGENT is a bold, immersive political thriller that entertains as much as it provokes. Thoughtful, tense and politically sharp, it confirms Mendonça as one of Brazil’s most vital contemporary voices, delivering bravura filmmaking that respects its audience and delivers tenfold.

Brazil, 1977. Marcelo, a technology expert in his early forties, is on the run. Hoping to reunite with his young son, he travels to Recife during Carnival, seeking refuge amid the city’s riot of colour, music and movement. Instead, he discovers a place thick with surveillance and suspicion, where tyranny erodes connection and communities are forced to form in secret.

Wagner Moura gives a Best Actor–winning performance as this quietly defiant, everyday hero, anchoring a film that pays tribute to those disappeared under the Brazilian dictatorship. Beautifully shot in lush period detail, THE SECRET AGENT is gripping, mischievous and political sharp, as well as an emotionally resonant portrait of loss and resistance.

The Secret Agent is shown in Brasilian Portuguese with English subtitles.
