The Judgement Hall Festival: The Legend of Suram Fortress + Live Score

The Judgement Hall Festival closes with a double presentation on the Rio’s largest screen, bringing together film, live sound, and site-specific curation.

The event culminates in a newly commissioned live score by Neptunian Maximalism to THE LEGEND OF SURAM FORTRESS, directed by Sergei Parajanov. The film is presented in a special restoration, shown in collaboration with the Georgian National Film Centre.

A haunting folk legend brought to life, THE LEGEND OF SURAM FORTRESS tells of a kingdom whose great fortress continually collapses before completion. Seeking answers, a young man consults a fortune teller who reveals that the walls will only stand if someone is buried within them. As destiny closes in, he realises the sacrifice demanded is his own, transforming myth into a tragic meditation on fate and duty.

Also screening is DEEP ENGLAND, a short performance film by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, created with Gazelle Twin and NYX. Presented in a cinema setting, Deep England translates the choral–electronic work into a focused, seated encounter with voice, image, and cultural memory.

A rare closing night event, bringing together two distinct cinematic works under a single curatorial frame.

THE LEGEND OF SURAM FORTRESS is shown in Georgian with English subtitles. DEEP ENGLAND is shown in English without subtitles.
