“Dear
Mr Manley…” These words begin the hundreds of letters sent from the
trenches of the First World War to Ralph Manley, the dedicated secretary
of Stoke Newington’s Mildmay Club, then known as the Mildmay Radical
Club & Institute.
Discovered
several years ago in the Club’s building, the letters were written by
soldiers thanking Manley for the care parcels of cigarettes and
chocolate he sent them, along with news from home. There were hundreds
of them, all mixed together.
First
catalogued by the Club’s historian and later carefully conserved by the
Mildmay Club Archive Group, the letters offer a raw, emotional and
often humorous glimpse into the lives of Mildmay members who went off to
fight. As researchers began to follow the stories behind the letters, a
fascinating mystery about Mr Manley himself began to emerge.
Following the screening of Dear Mr Manley, a Q and A will be hosted by Research Historian Tony Rich with members of the production team, including the documentary’s writer and director, David Baksh, genealogists, and members of the Mildmay Club Archive Group. The discussion will explore both the uncovering of the story and the process of making the documentary.
