Bad Trip – Horror Psychedelia and Nightmarescapes in the Digital Sphere
Welcome to the 3rd and final screening of Dream Emulator’s very own LSD Season, a season
of screenings + rave celebrating Osamu Sato’s cult classic (not)game, LSD: Dream Emulator,
alongside the many pieces of art/film/video games that it inspired directly and indirectly as part
of its lasting legacy in our digital imaginations.
You’ve been riding high, but unfortunately, things are taking a turn for the worse. The tab you
took had a distinctive bitter taste that you missed in all the excitement. You chose to keep on
truckin’, now the walls are turning to flesh and eyes, the tv screen is whispering straight into
your nostrils you, and you’re melting into sandpaper coated furniture.
In this screening we’ll be exploring the depths of an expansive category of psychedelia that
leans heavily into horror elements/ tropes, and vice versa the kinds of horror that use
psychedelia to break free of the constraints that traditional narrative and film-making techniques
impose. Whether it be through hallucinations, alien worlds, or building-shaped organisms, these
films/games/artworks will drag you through hells you could barely imagine let alone exist within
for longer than the whistle stop tour we’ll be taking. Barely a departure from emulating dreams,
the human imagination let loose on computer screens is where these nightmares came from,
and the only difference between these visions and our previous screenings, is the one bad tab
you should have spat out </3
On our journey through the shadow realms we may encounter horrors of the flesh (Scorn,
Yames), of the mind (Kittyhorrorshow, Silent Hill), Endless fractal Corridors, Dead channels
with sentient static (2:22AM), Dreamcore compilations gone wrong, Digital Video art
(derogatory), Music Videos (atonal), Internet Art (tacky), CreepyPastas, and maybe even
something coherent, although we don’t recommend holding your breath. This screening will be
intense at points, but as each others trusty mutual trip sitters you’ll (hopefully) make it out alive,
and maybe even find some beauty in the madness <3 .... - maybe
Ticketholders may collect a hand assembled Dream Emulator zine, these will be available on a
first come first served basis, some of our older zine issues will be on sale the bar also.
