Classic Matinee: The Shop Around The Corner

For our December Classic Matinee, step into the warmth of THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER, Ernst Lubitsch’s timeless romantic comedy starring James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan.

Set in a charming Budapest gift shop at Christmastime, two co-workers bicker endlessly by day, unaware that they’ve fallen in love as anonymous pen pals by night. With sparkling wit, tenderness, and festive atmosphere, Lubitsch’s masterful direction transforms this tale of mistaken identity into one of the most beloved love stories in cinema history.

Classic Matinee is our monthly senior screening, where tickets are just £2.50 for those over 60 years, and we offer free tea, coffee, and biscuits for all! These screenings are accessible with the lights left partially on throughout the film, and feature an intermission midway through the performance. It's a fantastic opportunity to socialise and a chance to experience the full 1930s atmosphere of the Rio, as we open up the circle for the classic cinema experience.
