Mexican Melodrama: Stronger than Love

 ¡Too MuchMexican Melodrama!

Stronger Than Love (Mas Fuerte que el Amor)

An intoxicating melodrama starring Miroslava Stern as Barbara who defies social codes and patriarchal control.

Carlos, a former factory worker of humble origins, has made millions—but the upper class refuses to accept him as one of its own. Meanwhile, Bárbara, the spoiled daughter of an industrialist, is to enter into a loveless marriage of convenience. Tensions arise when the two fall madly in love.

With torrential storms, moonlit beaches and sweeping Cuban backdrops, STRONGER THAN LOVE ignites with passion, situating female lust and agency at the heart of its fiery drama.

Stronger Than Love: ¡Too Much Mexican Melodrama! is a touring programme of visually lush, emotionally explosive films from Mexico’s Golden Age (1930s-1950s). Curated by Invisible Women through a feminist lens, the programme celebrates melodrama’s heightened aesthetics and unruly passions as a radical space for female expression: on screen and behind the camera. Delivered with the support of BFI FAN, awarding funds from The National Lottery.

This screening of Stronger Than Love includes specially commissioned descriptive subtitles suitable for D/deaf and hard of hearing audiences, provided by Matchbox Cineclub.
