NEVER WATCHING MOVIES AND SCARY CLAIRE PRESENT: THE WIZ (1978).
Motown classic THE WIZ is a dazzling transposition of the classic tale of the Wizard of Oz. Set in a fantastical New York City and adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical of the same title, THE WIZ features an all star, all African-American cast including Diana Ross, a 19 year old Michael Jackson in his feature film debut, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Mabel King, Theresa Merritt, Thelma Carpenter, Lena Horne and Richard Pryor.
This holiday classic incorporates the concepts of soul and the language of soul music. Home is a feeling more than a place and home is self-knowledgement. It allegorizes Black migration and performance while celebrating Black culture. Other themes integral to this adaptation include the dangers of urban living, domestic servitude, and law enforcement's untenable relationship to the black community.
Directed by Sidney Lumet and Musical Directed by Quincy Jones, this show-stopping adaptation will have you dancing in your seats!
As a Never Watching Movies and Scary Claire collaboration event, you can expect a full trip to Oz complete with surprise goodies, raffles, themed drinks, and maybe even a wicked witch or two!
