The penultimate double bill Category H’s late night summer season Goth Films Or Films Of Interest To Goths is REVENGE OF THE SEQUELS: A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET III: DREAM WARRIORS X HELLRAISER II. 

Goth Films Or Films Of Interest To Goths was built from a list of films discovered in the Rio’s archive, organised under the same name. The list had over 50 films on it, and an abundance of them were sequels. Though sometimes berated by the general viewing public, there is a long running tradition of horror fans embracing sequels as being better, weirder and more entertaining than the original. In honour of this, we will be screening two beloved sequels from two sprawling franchises. 

Our double bill will begin with the third Nightmare On Elm Street  film DREAM WARRIORS. The directorial debut of Chuck Russell, who would go on to direct The Mask (1994), and featuring Patrica Arquette in her first feature role, Nightmare On Elm Street III is widely considered one of the best in the franchise. A group of teenagers admitted to a psychiatric ward all begin to be targeted by Freddy Krueger, and have to band together in order to fight his growing power. Both Robert Englund and Heather Langenkamp reprise their roles from the first two films, as Nightmare On Elm Street III amps up the practical effects and terror. Sweet dreams….. 

After a short break, get prepared for Hell in HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II. The cenobites make a return after the doctor caring for Kirsty Cotton (Ashley Laurnece) after the events of the first film lets his obsessions get the better of him. The interdimensional sadomasochists wreck havoc in this even darker, even bloodier, sequel. Almost avant-garde, certainly unpredictable, HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II is the perfect film to watch in  a late night Rio Cinema haze. 

Our double bill will begin at 23:15, the same time late night double bills historically started at the Rio. Don’t worry if you aren’t familiar with the franchises, we will be recapping so no one gets lost. There will be plenty of Category H surprises in store, and we can’t wait to see you at the penultimate Goth Films Or Films Of Interest To Goths screening!
