CNFW: Chronically Online: A Personal History of the UK Internet
We all have that one YouTube video we’re obsessed with. Or that one vine that we think about more than most movies.
Join us for a night of digital delights on the big screen: a programme of online video that showcases the stories Britain tells about itself through the internet. From vlogs to memes to uncategorisable curiosities, these videos might not have initially been intended as ‘cinema’, but what is cinema if not images and narratives that are so iconic that they stick in our heads?
Our relationships to the internet are so personal - there isn’t a ‘canon’ for online moving image in the same way there is for movies, and so we’re all feel free to follow our own obsessions. To put this programme together, we’ve gathered a group of chronically online curators to lead us down their own favourite rabbit holes. We’ve also taken part of our programme from the BFI’s new archive for online moving image.
The programme will be followed by a panel with a few of the creators whose work featured in the showcase, digging into how they think about their videos as ‘art’, crafting an online identity, and living under the shadow of your digital footprint.
‘Chronically Online’ is presented in partnership with the BFI National Archive’s Our Screen Heritage Project, a dedicated acquisition programme focused on addressing the under-representation of online moving image in the national collection.
Our Screen Heritage is supported by the BFI Screen Heritage Fund, awarding National Lottery Funding.
This screening is part of The Creative Nonfiction Film Weekend. As well as buying individual tickets, you can also purchase a ticket with a festival pass at cnfw.co.uk
