Synopsis

The UK Premiere of WHITNEY: CAN I BE ME broadcast live from the Sheffield Documentary Festival features a screening of the film followed by a Q&A with legendary documentary director Nick Broomfield and a tribute performance by Michelle John.

Whitney Houston was going to be the greatest female vocalist ever. For a time, she was... the epitome of a music superstar, an “American Princess,” the most awarded female artist ever with more consecutive number ones than The Beatles, and acclaim as one of the greatest voices of all time. But on the darker side...racism, religion, drugs, sexuality, self-doubt, gossip, rivalry, parental and music industry demands and a troubled marriage played out in headlines. She died in 2012 at the age of 48.

With largely never-seen before footage, exclusive live recordings, and insights and revelations from those closest to her, documentarian Nick Broomfied and iconic music video director Rudi Dolezal tell the story of an incredible and poignant rise and fall. It is both a portrait of a remarkable woman, a passionate singer who needed more help than she received, and an unflinching, gripping, and wholly committed exploration of a great talent given and taken away.
