TOGETHER ALONE

“If you are lonely when you are alone, then you are in bad company”

- Jean-Paul Sartre

Curated by Octavian Dancila as part of the Programming and Curation MA at the National Film and Television School, TOGETHER ALONE is a season of four absorbing, thought-provoking films exploring solitude from different, and often surprising perspectives. BULANTI (Nausea) (112 mins)

Turkey 2015

Dir. Zeki Demirkubuz

Subtitled

Upon losing his wife and son, Ahmet has to struggle with the feeling of loneliness. As someone who does not care for anybody and does not knuckle under anything, he moves on quite unaffected. Yet some things start to change in himself and his life without any apparent reason.

NAUSEA shows no commitment of its character and no explanation of Ahmet’s behaviour leaving us to think: this is just the way human beings are and it is not necessary to explain seemingly irrational behaviour that is sometimes cruel, sometimes self-punishing, sometimes obsessive.

NOTHING PERSONAL (85 mins)

Netherlands/Ireland 2009

Dir.Urszula Antoniak

Lotte Verbeek, Stephen Rea, Tom Charlfa

Urszula Antoniak brings a powerful female character to her feature debut, questioning human relationships and how much do we need to know about a person to trust and empathise with him or her?

Alone in her empty flat, from her window Anne observes the people passing by who nervously snatch up the personal belongings and pieces of furniture she has put out on the pavement. Her final gesture of taking a ring off her finger signals she is leaving her previous life in Holland behind to lead a solitary, wandering existence in Ireland.
