Synopsis

A portrait of the artist as a young woman. Director Joanna Hogg’s semi- autobiographical feature is a refreshingly honest and beautifully observed tale of a young woman whose dreams could be destroyed by an intense, emotionally fraught relationship.

Bleak 1980s London. Julie is a young film student struggling to find a firm direction in life when she meets the seemingly unwavering and decisive Anthony. An intense romance blossoms but as the relationship develops it becomes clear that Anthony is not being honest about all aspects of himself and Julie slowly discovers that there could be potentially devastating consequences for them both...

Compelling performances from mother and daughter Tilda and Honor Swinton Byrne, and some unforgettably powerful imagery, make Joanna Hogg's A SOUVENIR a dream-like, visually splendid tale of first love from one of the UK's most distinctive and exciting filmmakers. It was produced by Martin Scorsese and was the winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2019.
