Synopsis

“Every black person born in America was born on Beale Street, born in the black neighbourhood of some American city… Beale Street is our legacy.” James Baldwin

Oscar-winning (eventually) director Barry Jenkins follows the triumphant MOONLIGHT with a gorgeous, swooningly romantic adaptation of the great James Baldwin's semi-autobiographical 1974 novel.

The setting is 1950s Harlem. 19-year-old Tish (KiKi Layne) is married to 22-year-old artist Fonny (Stephan James) whom she has known since childhood. Their hopeful plans for the future come crashing down when Fonny is falsely accused of rape and imprisoned. The legal journey, often confounded by institutional racism, to clear his name before their first baby is born merges with memories of happier times...

With its standout performances – not least Regina King as Tish’s mother - exquisite photography, and lush orchestral score, IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK is a timeless and intoxicating celebration of Love in a world of oppression and injustice. It is also one of the most intoxicating cinematic experiences of the year.
